Music Essentials

The Music Essentials course is designed to provide you with everything you need to know to become the creator of your musical journey. It can be tricky to know what to look for in music lessons or courses, either for yourself or your child if you’re a parent. This Music Essentials course will empower you to be an informed learner so you can make sure you’re getting off to a good start.

Or if you’re an experienced musician but for some reason you just feel stuck, the Music Essentials course will give you the specific tools and mindset you need to troubleshoot and solve your issue. Allowing you to reach your full potential with music.

Because no matter where you are in your journey, it’s never too late to take stock and start anew. That’s what My Music Genesis is all about. Your creation, and your expression.

Out of respect for you and love for music, we’ve crafted five unique music lessons with perspectives you won’t find anywhere else. So you can learn the essential skills of music, and where they fit into your musical journey.

In these lessons you will explore the pillars of modern music education. And while one of these lessons is focused primarily on the piano, all five of these lessons contain vital information for anyone who wants to learn music. Regardless of the specific instrument you want to learn. Because music is more than the instrument you play. Your music begins with YOU.

First we’ll look at Audiation. In this video you’ll learn about the most powerful musical skill you’ve likely never heard of. We’ll also talk about the first instrument everyone should learn. Audiation is crucial to owning your musical expression, yet the concept is almost universally misunderstood. Even if you Google the term, the top answer that comes up is incomplete and misleading. In this video we’ll set you straight and make you the boss of your musical growth.

In the second lesson we’ll take a close look at Piano Technique. Although it’s important to note that the anatomical principles you’ll learn apply to any musical instrument you might ever want to play. It can even help you if you ever experience discomfort while using your computer keyboard or smart phone. But we’ll also be looking at some issues specific to playing the piano. These are areas of Piano Technique that I often hear learners express frustration about. Issues like:

✅ How to play with both hands?

✅ Why are my wrists sore?

✅ When should I be practicing with a metronome?

Plus one critical issue I only rarely see discussed: how to process mistakes in a healthy way that will enable you to become a stronger musician without becoming deflated and discouraged.

The third lesson in the Music Essentials course focuses on Reading Music. This might be the most important music related video you watch this year. Because reading music has become the de facto summit of music learning in this culture. If you’ve ever had even just one music lesson, I bet you were taught some of the symbols of music notation. Things like what a quarter note means, and where’s Middle C on the music staff. But one of the main topics you’ll be exploring in this video is, if Reading Music is truly so fundamental, then why is it that so many students leave music classes and lessons without having learned to read? If so many children spend so much time learning about quarter notes and Middle C, then why are so few adults reading music as an enriching part of their regular lives? We’ll get to the bottom of that and cover other important topics like sight reading, lead sheets, and Synthesia, too.

The fourth lesson is on Music Theory. In this video you’ll learn about the concepts musicians use when we’re contemplating music and discussing it with our colleagues. We’ll be talking about intervals, chords, rhythm, ear training, and more. You’ll also learn where exactly in your musical journey is the best time to focus on Music Theory. This is such a popular topic, with modern YouTube influencers like Rick Beato and Adam Neely dazzling viewers with their theory knowledge. But that’s not what THIS video is. I won’t be trying to dazzle you with my knowledge. Instead we’re focused on your journey and how you can use music theory to supercharge your own musical process.

The fifth and final video in Music Essentials is an Introduction to the Genesis Method. This is my method to help you find your voice as a musician. By this point, if you’ve watched the first four videos, you’ll understand that what I’m offering is very different from what’s normally taught in music lessons. We’ll be covering how and why we do what we do, including the activities necessary to help you develop your musicianship in the most profound way…which also happens to be the most fun way! Because I do believe that music lessons have to be fun. And there’s nothing more fun than seriously learning a complex skill. Music is complex. Just like you are. And I respect you enough to take your learning seriously. I’m committed to helping you. And the Introduction to the Genesis Method goes into detail about how we’re going to do that.

It’s precisely because these music education pillars are so critical, that for now I’m releasing this Music Essentials course at no cost. My hope is that whether you buy my Applied Courses or not, you will experience something valuable and life-changing from this Music Essentials course. It’s important to me that you’re headed in a good musical direction for you. Whether this is your first foray into music, or you’ve dabbled but you’re looking for a fresh start.
